A Steering committee made up of Principals, Martha
Langill and Andrew Mellow has been formed to begin the discussions on
the Lebanon Middle School programing. This group which is also includes;
classroom, Special Education, and Media Arts teachers from both
Seminary Hill and Lebanon Junior High will meet regularly until the
building is opened in 2012. Statement from Co-Principals, January 2011 "As the construction of the new middle school begins the planning for what is going to happen inside the building began last March. As soon as the vote was known the staff began to organize. A steering committee comprised of staff from Seminary Hill School and the Junior High was assembled to begin the planning. From the beginning it was clear that the existing programs at the two schools would have to be combined and modified to accommodate the new grade configuration of grades five through eight. Everything from discipline policies to recess, lunch schedules to physical education classes, report cards to co-curricular activities will be impacted. Several meetings of the two staffs from the schools occurred in the spring to gather their input about the planning process and to brainstorm the integral parts of a middle school. With the ideas generated in the meetings the Steering Committee prioritized key pieces of work that needed to be completed in the summer. Subcommittees were established to work on building community between the staffs of the two buildings and to combine the student handbooks from the two schools. As the subcommittee work was going on a new mission statement was drafted by the Steering Committee. The summer work led to the establishment of three new committees to look at discipline, grading, and extracurricular activities. These groups will meet this fall and will be forwarding their recommendations to the Steering Committee. Members from the Steering Committee will also be busy this fall collecting information about other five through eight middle schools in northern New England. A few members will be attending the National Middle School Association conference where they too will be visiting middle schools in the Baltimore, Maryland area. Work will continue this winter for the Steering Committee as they meet and sort through all of the information that is gathered and presented from the various subcommittees and visits. The goal is to present and finalize the program for the Lebanon Middle School by the end of the 2010-2011 school year." Andrew Mellow Martha A. Langill Co-Principals, Lebanon Middle School |
